Newhouse 4 Teens Announces Teen Dating Violence Prevention Resource

Overland Park, KS (PRWEB) August 11, 2011

With the start of a new school year, teens everywhere will be focused on dating and relationships. For most, it will be a positive experience. For some, though, it can mean being subjected to physical and/or emotional abuse. A new website, newhouse4teens.org has been developed and launched as part of an ongoing effort by Newhouse Domestic Violence Shelter (for abused women) to provide the resources necessary for teens, their parents, teachers and counselors to educate themselves about the signs and dangers of dating violence. While the site is directly intended as a resource for teens in the Kansas City metropolitan area, much of the information is valuable and applicable nationwide. The site was created and developed by Ascend Integrated Media, Overland Park, Kansas in conjunction with Newhouse, Kansas City, Missouri.

?We see the 'Newhouse4Teens' site to be an important step forward in terms of awareness and prevention of teen dating violence everywhere,? said Bridgette Mavec, Vice President of Clinical Services for Newhouse. ?Teen dating violence is not only under-reported, but under recognized. Many parents, friends and community members have known a victim of dating violence but have either not recognized the signs or were unsure how to help. With more readily available and accessible information, it?s our hope that more victims will be able to break free of the relationship and attain safety.?

Along with the website and online campaign, Newhouse has an ongoing educational initiative within local schools, Girl Scout troops and church groups providing the community with awareness about this growing problem. According to a 2005 Liz Claiborne, Inc study, half of all teens know someone who has been physically, sexually, or verbally abused in a dating relationship. And while the majority of those abused are girls, high school boys are also susceptible.

With statistics like these, it?s apparent that education is vital in combating such a prevalent issue facing the young teen population.

Cam Bishop, CEO of Ascend Integrated Media, expressed the custom publishing company?s pride at being chosen to partner on this campaign. ?We are proud and honored to be working with Newhouse on this important cause. Whenever we can apply our creativity and media distribution skills to help our nonprofit clients develop greater awareness and enhance connections with volunteers and donors, it is very gratifying.?
